Royal Mail Sorting Office Stornoway
Feasibility studies for a low/zero carbon Royal Mail Sorting Office in Stornoway. The brief required a simple cost eff ective facility that could be erected quickly, provide very low running costs and minimal emissions. The project was intended to be a research project to assist Royal Mail meet their program for becoming zero carbon.
Mixed Use Proposals Newcastle
Alongside a masterplan for the surrounding area including retail, leisure and housing KFM were asked to design the new headquarters for the council services which serves as a pioneer project accommodating new jobs and performing an urban role in being the focus for the first phase of the regeneration of the site. The business centre is arranged on four levels with the entrance halls on the town square and ferry approach respectively. The building will provide modern, predominantly open plan, office space that will assist rapidly changing occupation patterns and fit-out plans .The base build will facilitate the incorporation of the latest IT provision that will be installed as part of the fit-out.
Ft William Mixed Use
Concept study for development of leisure and housing in northern climates. The study is sited on reclaimed tidal land in northern Scotland. The construction method allows for off-site prefabrication, delivered to site by sea. The mixed use housing, shops and restaurants surround a central public leisure space which is protected with a lightweight ETFE foil roof allowing all year round activity. The tidal lock allows mooring and extends the water activity throughout the day.
LEX Walsall
Second place awarded scheme for a mixed use development. A simple courtyard diagram has been adopted to explore new ways of combining housing, hotel, offi ce and commercial uses within an atrium typology. The large atrium garden is enclosed with a clear lightweight foil roof in order to moderate climate and extend the range of activities within. The protected garden will allow all year-round use and can be fl exibly confi gured as shared garden space for the housing and have busy active public performances and events.
Maratex Bata Mare Center
YRM commissioned KFM to develop the facade and massing design for their Maratex retail project in Romania. The envelope designs were developed using parametric modelling allowing detailed design control over the constantly varying surface responding to the access and environmental requirements of the project.
Milan Trade Halls
Grimshaw commissioned KFM to develop the design and the programme for the Milan fashion trade fair hall competition. The project won the international invited design competition. The roof form follows a series of parametric definitions which were modelled with variable control points enabling adjustments throughout the design process. The plan form follows the curves defined in the masterplan guidelines and is divided into 5m wide orthogonal bays.
Battersea Power Station
Grimshaw commissioned KFM to assist with the submission to English Heritage for the redevelopment of Battersea Power station. KFM prepared the models and drawings to describe the interventions to all areas of the listed building.
